While the Governmenfs mini-budget in September set off alarm bells in the City - with the Bank of England having to take emergency measures to steady the bonds markets - the roads sector gave a cautious welcome to its Growth Plan. New chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng (pictured) pledged to accelerate a long list of infrastructure projects, including the Stonehenge road tunnel, and raised the prospect of planning and regulatory reform. The Government said it will move to tackle the UK's 'slow' and 'fragmented' planning system. Industry leaders gave a somewhat muted welcome to the announcements, warning that similar promises have been made before. Mr Kwarteng's Growth Plan 2022, published on 23 September, provides a wish list of infrastructure projects, including highways, rail, and local transport, 'which will be accelerated as fast as possible, aiming to get the vast majority starting construction by the end of 2023'. |
