Solihull is seeing economic growth at one of the highest rates in England, with many new residential, infrastructure and business developments across the area. It is critical that we are equipped to deal with this and understand how to facilitate and plan future mobility. We worked in partnership with Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) to set up a project looking at how we could make future public transport more sustainable and efficient. Self-driving technology has the potential to transform the way we move around our towns, cities and rural areas and TfWM has been active in the autonomy space. Together, we identified a number of strategic opportunities to unlock funding for the region. The fact that we have significant autonomous vehicle manufacturers in the area presented an opportunity to test how self-driving buses might work in the borough. We began by securing £250,000 funding from Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and we then became the first local authority in the country to buy an autonomous shuttlebus. |
