A total of 76 highways schemes have been promised cash under the Government's 'Network North' pledge to redirect £36bn from the curtailed HS2 rail scheme, but the immediate impact will be muted. While Network North may get a number of roads projects started, the funding looks at times illusory and at best more like patching up holes in budgets hit by raging inflation. Also, a number of gaffes - including naming the wrong city in the A259 upgrade plans, and listing a tram scheme that had already been built - have thrown doubt on the wider venture, with prime minister Rishi Sunak forced to admit some of the transport projects were only 'illustrative'. Most of the road schemes have formed part of earlier government funding announcements and one had even begun work, but many others, including those with contractors in place, are nowhere near starting. |
