The SuperLow-Carbon asphalt range uses alternative energy sources to lower its embodied carbon footprint in production, and includes biogenic material in the Shell binder that effectively locks CO2 within the asphalt rather than releasing it back into the atmosphere'. So it effectively creates a 'carbon sink'. Early indications from laboratory work suggest that the fatigue strength of the asphalt produced using the biogenic components is slightly better, and could reduce cracking in the long-term, according to Aggregate Industries. Once harvested, the biogenic material is used in the bitumen to replace 'an element of the fossil fuel derived products'. The biogenic matter is stored in the asphalt throughout its life and is still present even after the asphalt is recycled. The new range is also manufactured at lower temperatures than standard asphalt, which means it requires less energy to produce than its hot mix equivalent. It also reduces nuisance fuming, odour and steam at the project site, which in turn lowers burn risk, improves visibility and provides better working conditions for operatives. |
