Around a year ago, Shell went through an internal restructure to tackle its decarbonisation targets on a sector-by-sector basis; as a result Shell Construction and Road was born. The ultimate aim is, in line with the Paris Agreement, to become a net zero emissions energy business by 2050, along the way reducing absolute emissions by 50% by 2030, compared to 2016 levels on a net basis. As global head of the Construction and Road business, Mr Ojha concedes that it is one of eight to 10 'hard to update' sectors that Shell works in: 'This sector is responsible for almost one-third of carbon emissions globally and one-sixth of global GDP. The sector is growing at 2-3% year on year. It's a very important sector. This industry really needs a strong dose of innovation to make a step change because we are the biggest carbon emitters in the world.' |
