The TTF 2021-2022 Traffic Signals Challenge was open to all local highway authorities outside London. Out of the 121 that were eligible, 101 applied for funding by submitting bids focused on seven key themes: 1. provide a plan for improvements 2. prioritise an upgrade plan 3. links to carbon reduction and air quality targets 4. monitoring plan, including indicator selection and targets 5. technology vision 6. support to public transport, vulnerable road users and active travel 7.future-proofing. Such was the response, the DfT probably has more data on traffic signals than ever before, having never done such a comprehensive survey, Highways understands. The overall picture is that councils have a strong understanding of the assets and their maintenance needs, but there was Less of a dear picture of how traffic signals and traffic control feed into wider objectives such as decarbonisation, social inclusion, active travel and health. There were also knowlegde gaps about the future of signal technology, modelling and data, and how these could support autonomous vehicles and a more connected network. |
