It is sadly well known in this sector that progress on road safety has stalled over the last 10 years. There were 1,752 reported road deaths in 2019 (putting COVID years asidel, while in 2010 there were 1,850. Because of this, we often forget just how successful crash reduction efforts were in the previous decade. In the year 2000, there were 3,409 recorded road fatalities - meaning deaths were almost halved in the first years of the century. One of the campaigns that supported this achievement was DfBB, first established by the Department for Transport in the noughties. Based on 2006 figures, it was estimated that between a third and a quarter of the death toll on our roads involved someone driving for work, which at the time meant around 800 to 1,060 deaths a year compared to 241 fatal injuries to workers in the 'traditional workplace". |
