The collapse into administration of contractor Midas Group has hit a programme of public realm projects in south west England. Midas was one of four contractors appointed in November 2020 by South Somerset District Council to a L12m framework to deliver public realm works across Chard, Wincanton and Yeovil. The framework allowed the four contractors to bid for work. Procurement was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic but six months later, the council appointed Midas to deliver a L9.3m package of public realm works around Westminster Street and Middle West Street as part of the wider L21.1m Yeovil Refresh regeneration programme. The work, which included new street lighting and stone paving, started in September 2021 but ground to a halt in February after Midas slumped into administration. A spokesperson for South Somerset District Council said: 'We are saddened by the news of Midas and would like to thank them for all their work on the Yeovil Refresh project to this date.' One of the other three contractors - Tarmac subsidiary Alun Griffiths, South West Highways (SWH) and Knights Brown - appointed to the framework is now expected to be called on to complete the work. |
