It is a truth universally acknowledged, that with the engineering profession lacking diversity, and the sector facing a worsening skills shortage, broadening the range of people taking up careers in engineering is essential.Last summer, Engineering UK reported that just 14.5% of all engineers are women. The Women's Engineering Society pointed out that this was after the number of women in engineering had risen by a quarter since 2016.According to the Royal Academy of Engineering, just 7.8% of engineering professionals are from minority ethnic backgrounds, compared to 12% of the UK working age population. However, in 2018, 27% of UK-domiciled engineering graduates came from minority ethnic backgrounds. This illustrates the potential for the make-up of the profession to change, if these graduates find their way into roles that match their academic achievement. The University of Warwick hosts both a school of engineering and WMG [Warwick Manufacturing Group] - an academic department in its own right and all three hold Silver Awards from Athena Swan. Established in 2005, the Athena Swan Charter is a framework used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education and research. |
