As temperatures drop, existing potholes and highway ironwork failures become an even bigger problem as deterioration quickens. It's a perpetual circle, but this cycle can be broken. It doesn't need mass investment with expensive new materials, just an understanding of what happens below the road surface and how the risk of failures can be prevented. It's basic science. Build using inappropriate or sub-standard materials (bricks, rubble or waste construction material) and asset life expectancy is dramatically reduced. Poor construction with no dedicated subbase is like hitting a wall with a sledgehammer - it's not long before a void appears. As soon as a crack appears in the surface course, the weather has its weak spot and does the rest of the damage, with an ever-growing pothole the result.A dedicated, yet simple, engineered solution exists to seat and level ironworks without movement, preventing potholes from forming around them. Shimpac Systems developed Roadshims in the 1980's as a three-tiered, layered laminated base surround for ironworks, intended to stand the test of time as a permanent solution - 35 years and counting at the original UK test sites in the south east of England. |
