Back in the early days of the internet, there was a moment of time when some fairly fundamental questions were being asked about access and ownership rights.Copyright holders and their lawyers - particularly of music and movies, but also of technical designs - were nervous. We continue to live with the consequences of this when it comes to considering data.'Data' is perhaps less tangible than copyright or other forms of 'intellectual property'. It is something that is usually the product of industrial, commercial or technological processes. While it can be inherently valuable, in many cases it is not really 'owned', but, rather, is the subject of 'ownership-like' rights. There is no specific legislation that regulates ownership of data, and it often seems that there is no real consensus on how to regulate it. Different industry sectors will have different views how to do this. |
