Transport secretary Grant Shapps said he accepted all the recommendations in a report from the Transport Select Committee, published in November, and the Department for Transport (DfT) has broadly agreed to implement them. The Government will now collect five years of safety and economic data for every all-lane running (ALR) scheme introduced before 2020, which will effectively freeze the roll-out until at least 2024. It will also look to publish an initial report this year comparing the business cases of ALR schemes and controlled motorways.ALR schemes where work is already underway, which the DfT said were all more than 50% complete, will be finished. Schemes that have now been paused, including the M3 between Junctions 9-14, will still see improvements to the central reservation, i.e. the installation of concrete barriers. The DfT added that alternative options for enhancing capacity on the strategic road network (SRN) would be considered as part of the preparation of the third Road Investment Strategy (2025-30). |
