Of course we did not know it at the time but Road Expo was to become former transport minister Graeme Dey's last major industry event in our sector; he resigned in late January 'for health-related reasons' [see page 54).After surveying the hall and chatting to senior civil servants - 'they would never forgive me if I didn't attend,' he told Highways - Mr Dey gave himself a fine send off, with a strong speech to a full conference hall recalling the progress he had made in his time at the wheel. The impact of COVID was naturally high on the agenda, and Mr Dey wisely analysed the problem rather than trying to provide any easy answers.'What we are trying to do is let it stabilise with a view to building back. One of the challenges for us is trying to model future public transport usage. You can model whatever you like, but it will probably be off. And that's very difficult, for example we're copping a bit of flak just now because we have started to restore some of the train services in Scotland, but not all the ones we had before. And that's not popular but we can't afford to run empty trains...loss making trains. And what we're trying to do is to look at where the demand is currently and where we think the demand will be.' |
