Instead, he threw up his hands and, inviting nothing more than friendly laughter from the packed conference hall, said in good-natured retreat: 'I am not getting involved in that.' The topic was road user charging. In a sign of how the politics is shifting around this now only occasionally contentious issue, Mr Harris had openly declared: 'At some point in the future I think we will see road charging and having the technology base in place to support whatever may happen is important. I think that is the way ahead. But now is not the time that is going to happen.' |
