摘要: In January Essex County Council proposed to extend by two hours the time when street lights are switched off during the night. The following month, the plan was dropped, having run into public and political opposition. Similarly, unitary authority Southend-on-Sea City Council dropped a budget proposal to dim streetlights for longer after residents and councillors objected. Illustrating the sensitivity of the issue, cabinet member Cllr Paul Collins said pointedly: 'We will continue to keep our streetlights on during the night, unlike our neighbours in Essex, who currently turn them off for four hours every night.' The fact that lights were dimmed - to as low as 30% of usual intensity - was news to many residents but had reportedly been happening since 2014 when the council launched a programme to install LED lighting.
