How do people become addicted? My continued and ever increasing use of alcohol led me into addiction. It started because alcohol is such a powerful generator of 'good feelings'. The relaxation, freedom and joy you feel when drinking that first drink in the sunshine on holiday all comes from the alcohol in your drink. Or does it? Alcohol is one of the most addictive substances on earth and it is ridiculous to think that 'it wouldn't happen to me' or 'I would never let it get that far' and 'if I ever did that I would stop'. Alcohol is addictive; the more you drink, the more likely you are to be addicted. AA and others believe in the disease model - that alcohol is a disease that you never asked for. That something in your body led you down that path, almost from the very first taste of it. Whether you agree with this model or not, it is important to understand that none of us has the power to stop addiction coming if we imbibe enough of an addictive substance. It is just chemistry: when you play with addictive substances, they will win. |
