Tarmac's Birmingham Asphalt Plant in Washwood Heath is located just south of the raised concrete structure of the M6 close to Spaghetti Junction and to the north of a huge construction site that will become a key part of HS2. When Highways visited earlier this summer, there was a constant flow of vehicles in and out of the plant, as well as a front loader constantly taking different aggregate types from stores to the asphalt production plant on the site. Tarmac says the plant can run around the clock if necessary and can produce up to 320 tonnes of asphalt and batch up to 160 cubic metres of concrete an hour. For such a large output, however, there were few other people working on the site, with the production largely carried out from a highly computerised control room. A careful climb to nearly the top of the asphalt plant gave a spectacular, if vertiginous, view down towards the massive HS2 site, which, being the other side of the rail line, includes its own concrete plant. |
