摘要: The highways sector should treat health in the same way that we treat safety. In highways and wider construction, we have made huge steps forward in safety management. Physical wellbeing is now treated as paramount to prevent injury and loss of life, as well as project incidents and fines. So what is stopping.us from taking the same attitude to mental health and wellbeing? Poor mental health is said to affect one in four people in the UK and the risk is particularly acute in construction and allied occupational groups, which are recognised as more vulnerable, with an increased rate of suicide. In 2021, 507 construction workers took their own lives. The death toll equates to 34 people per 100,000 in employment - up from 26 per 100,000 seven years ago. Andy Bell, deputy chief executive of the Centre for Mental Health, says: 'A culture of being open about mental health at every level, encouraging people to seek help when they need it and training managers, can all make people feel more confident and connected.'
