'Sustainability' is a word that has been bandied around for decades and it's worth going back to the original definition coined by the United Nations Brundtland Commission in 1987, which defined sustainability as 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'. It's a simple proposition when you think about it and our politicians and thought leaders (even in our industry] enthusiastically talk about sustainability, yet I doubt many of them have stopped to really consider the implications beyond their remits or immediate businesses. In 2015, the Welsh Government enacted the 'Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act' which I think is unique in the world. It essentially requires public bodies to consider the long-term impact of their decisions, while working with people, communities and each other to prevent poverty, health inequalities and climate change impacts. |
