Are autonomous vehicles ready for our roads? Perhaps the question needs to be the other way around. If so, the humble white line has a major role to play. The safety benefits of road markings are well documented and widely accepted. Road markings are designed to delineate, warn and inform drivers, ideally in all conditions. The risk of road traffic crashes is three times higher in wet, rainy and dark conditions. In such an environment, it doesn't take long for typical road markings to lose their brightness as surface water negates their reflectivity, making already difficult driving conditions all the more challenging. Road markings should serve as many drivers as possible, and the very nature of driving is changing. With the UK Government regularly reviewing laws related to autonomous vehicles and technology ever advancing, in the near future our road infrastructure will need to serve the human driver and many different machine vision systems. This means the quality of road markings will have a significant impact on the efficacy and the safety, of these systems. |
