Materials giant Tarmac has worked with Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees borough councils, as well as international partners including Shell, Volvo CE, Wirtgen and JCB, on a pathfinder low carbon project that it says 'has set a new benchmark for the way roads are maintained'. The project reduced the carbon emissions of the road resurfacing across three routes by up to 80% compared with traditional methods - meaning these individual schemes are thought to have the lowest CO2 emissions for any road resurfacing work in the UK, without using carbon offsetting. Initially scoped following conversations with Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees borough councils earlier in the summer, the work was carried out between 22 and 30 October. |
