I often say there is very little new under the highways sun and as a result, I probably spend too much time trying to dig out precedents, studies, research and basically anything I can lay my hands on to demonstrate that a new idea isn't actually new. In the field of good old fashioned human behaviour and how it is shaped by the environment, it's all been done before. If the truth be told, I actually enjoy uncovering something obscure or interesting and maybe it's the thrill of the chase that keeps me going back for more. I present a lecture a few times a year that warns of the risk of using old guidance and documents, and while that health warning is useful to hold in mind, it still frustrates me that we keep having to re-learn things. The flip side to this is we also do quite a lot of things which have become custom and practice, having forgotten why we do them, and then forget that we should also regularly challenge ourselves. |
