The Last Sunday of May 2021 was a red letter day for Northern Irish highways, when the removal of the last remaining cones signalled the completion of the A6 Randalstown to Castledawson dualling. The £189m scheme had a long gestation, with draft statutory orders published back in March 2007. Some sections had opened in 2019 and 2020. The full scheme covers 14.7km of the key A6 North Western Transport Corridor, connecting Belfast to Londonderry and many other settlements. The dualled road covers the busy stretch between the end of the M22 motorway at Randalstown and the point where traffic to Derry diverges from traffic to Omagh near Castledawson. |
