As you would expect, we have plenty of exclusive Christmas presents for you in our last issue of this challenging year: including an interview with National Highways' chief executive and our own state of the sector survey of more than 200 senior highways figures. (Not to mention the always brilliant, and of course practical, 'socks and jumpers' gifts from our usual contributors.) From speaking to Nick Harris and the sector, it is clear the roads industry needs to be on a mission to become more self-sustaining. Mr Harris asserts that we have 'largely got the network we need and therefore we largely have got the materials we need' - so he stresses that recycling will be a key focus for National Highways in the future. In the here and now, the brutal truth is we are struggling to make the sector itself sustainable. |
