A project to build a major bypass at Melton Mowbray will still go ahead, despite the cost more than doubling to £128m. The A606 North and East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road scheme was valued at £63.5m in 2018 but Leicestershire County Council has decided to press ahead with it and Galliford Try should start construction next April. Declan Keegan, the council's head of finance, told councillors at a crucial scrutiny meeting that 'there are no good options'. He added: 'If we proceed, if s going to cost us a lot of money and we're bearing all the construction risks. If we stop, we don't save a lot of money, but we still need to deal with the housing somehow. And if we pause it simply makes the situation worse.' The ring road scheme will improve access to sites earmarked for the development of 4,500 new homes. Housebuilders and developers including Bloor Homes and Inside Land Group have bought land in the area to develop new homes and Beflway is already building houses at Leicester Road. |
