A qualified civil engineer, Mark Kemp points out that while he has been in highways for most of his decades-long career, he didn't start off in local government and was originally involved in designing major roads. He worked briefly for what was then the Highways Agency before taking up a job with Hertfordshire County Council, in his home county, where he once again finds himself. He then worked for various county councils across the South East of England, including Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, moving up and 'taking on more things', as he puts it, starting in highways and broadening out into transport and waste. 'Then, about four years ago, the opportunity to become what is now called executive director came up. I live in Hertfordshire and was offered the job, so that was great - to come and work in my county and help make a difference to the environment I live in - something I hadn't been doing for a while.' |
