This summer we heard that some major suppliers are phasing out the production of a traditional bituminous surfacing material commonly used across the UK highway networks for decades: HRA. With over 25 years' experience in the UK highways sector, mainly with local highway authorities, I would like to make the case that highway authorities should retain HRA in their specifications and a provider of HRA in their supply chain. Full disclosure - when I started writing this article, I found myself reminiscing as a former divisional surveyor after the apparent demise of a familiar material, which has provided great service over many years and is still widely in place. However, I hope that I have made a balanced argument. The year 625 B.C. marks the first recorded evidence of asphalt being used in road construction when the ancient Babylonians built the first recorded asphalt road during the reign of King Nabopolassar. |
