| 摘要： | This time of year can feel a bit flat. The days are drawing out but the evenings are still dark. There's more rain to come. And it's cold. The economic outlook is, at best, uncertain and the wave of industrial unrest comes alongside a more general sense of unrest about the state of things. So, I'm here to remind you how incredibly lucky we are in this country. One of my Department for Transport chums observed, as we walked towards the office one morning a few years ago, that we should realise we lived in a great country, firstly because no-one was trying to shoot at us on our way to work and secondly because we lived in a country that paid people like us to worry about traffic jams and potholes. What a luxury! We are, to this day and in so many ways, a lucky country. History's blessing is that we are on the prime meridian and so straddle the international dateline, a gift to the global financial services industry. And we have well-developed networks of national infrastructure for water, energy, and transport. Well-developed, yes. Extensive, certainly. But also under stress. |
