In the bar the night before the RSMA conference, there was at least one uncharacteristic display of emotion from the road marking operatives assembled. 'When I heard about Stu leaving, I thought, "who is going to drive things forward now?"' On his way to the Construction Plant-hire Association, Mr Mclnroy can look back on a triumphant few years at the RSMA, having streamlined the association and improved its finances, raised standards, identified key areas for lobbying, commissioned primary research and even edged it closer to carrying out trials on the strategic road network (SRN). Unveiling the RSMA's latest work, Mr Mclnroy announced initial results from new research based on a survey of more than 2,100km of the major road network (MRN], which comprises many of the most vital roads managed by local authorities, connecting major conurbations and motorways and carrying high volumes of fast-moving traffic. Around a third of lane one MRN road markings could be classed as either defective in retro-reflectivity or absent completely. The inspection also discovered that the contrast between the vast majority of lane one markings and the pavement surface was below that required for in-vehicle sensors and autonomous vehicles. |
