The Tackling Decarbonisation with Purpose event was put on by Arup at the London Transport Museum and its backdrop was the firm's publication Toward net zero land transport, which Arup says 'highlights the thinking needed to help catalyse interventions for net zero land transport'. The report notes that transport is responsible for roughly a quarter of global carbon emissions and roughly 140 countries have either committed to or are agreeing to net zero targets. It adds that 'rapid change is now afoot'. The event's keynote speaker was Olympic and world cycling champion and active travel commissioner for England Chris Boardman. He argued that active travel is the ultimate form of low carbon transport and mentioned his own experience of selling his car, supported by a local cycle path to a nearby train station. In relation to local funding under the Government's Gear Change policy, he said: 'For the first time, the Department of Transport doesn't just have cash...we have the ability to help. We have engineers to help design; we can help plan networks, consultations; we can train staff - and that's a game changer, to actually enable people who want to do it. |
