Defining a digital road is a fascinating question and ultimately it means different things to different people. Broadly, the concept of digital roads focuses on the increasing use of IT, data and connectivity, which is set to rapidly and dramatically change the way roads are used and managed. The transport sector is facing unprecedented challenges from climate change, economic pressures and the drive to zero road deaths. Action must be taken: if not, the backlog of current issues will continue to grow, while local authority budgets continue to shrink and the demand for the critical services that they provide increases. At the same time, transport is becoming more connected, more digital and more complex. This growth in connected digital technologies presents the transport industry with many opportunities and has the potential to transform how we manage roads and deliver services. Technology and data can be used to improve decision-making, enhance existing services and enable new services. We already harness technology to provide information about the structure of our roads. For example, artificial intelligence is often used to augment fault reporting, to help local authorities better understand and visualise maintenance issues. Technology also provides data about maintenance, so we can understand if gullies are full and need attention, or the road temperature, so we can make decisions about gritting. |
