When people walk into the Citywatch room inside BBLP's Southampton operation, the conversation stops. 'People are mesmerized by the screens,' Mr Hammersley says. An entire city and its movement - 'the city boundary is our network boundary' - is being laid flat across a bank of screens filling one side of the room, with images selected from the operation's 400 cameras. It might not be exactly 'Everything everywhere all at once' - but it feels pretty close. Filtering this information is a team of between 12 and 14, working in shifts of no less than two at a time and up to four in exceptional situations - a Southampton/Portsmouth derby at St Mary's might do it. The service runs 24/7, 365, and the team do a lot more than manage roads. They are tasked with monitoring the vital signs of the city and if needs be they play nurse or police officer. Simply put, they are whatever the city needs them to be when they answer the city's call, literally. |
