摘要: The first national highways awards were launched by Highways in 2004. The inaugural Highways Magazine Excellence Awards (as was), was developed in partnership with the Department for Transport and the Highways Agency (also, as was) and took place at One Great George Street in Westminster. There were seven categories and the event was attended by 200 people, with Paul Ross as the host and former Highways editor JJ Tatten introducing the proceedings. Since then, the awards have expanded year-on-year. As it approaches its 20th anniversary on 11 October, it is set to host some 700 guests and hand out trophies in 17 categories. It has changed venues several times along the way only to return to a spot dose to Parliament at the Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster Bridge. Over those years, the Highways Agency has become a government-owned company and changed name twice, while the awards also changed name to become simply the Highways Awards. There have been 12 different transport secretaries and four different editors at Highways magazine, stewarding almost 200 issues. In all that time, the magazine only dropped print runs due to the COVID pandemic in 2020 and at the height of the 2008 financial crisis.
