The story of the highways materials market has been one of 'really slow progress over the last decade, until the last 12 months, which has seen the most progress yet,' Mr Smet tells Highways. He is primarily targeting the use of warm mix asphalt but adds that the issues run deeper, to innovation in general. In the roads sector, ACI Group specialises in asphalt additives imported from Europe under its Flomac brand, with a core focus on sustainability: 'We have a Social Value Quality Mark level 2 [an accreditation for working to ethical, sustainable and community-focused standards]. I think we are the only distributor to have one and it's recognised by the Cabinet Office. It allows us to live and breathe sustainability and social value.' The group provides a range of additives to create warm mix asphalt. These are supplied in melting bags that can be applied manually if you are producing under 80,000 tonnes of asphalt a year. If you are producing more than 150,000 tonnes a year, the company would recommend working with a third-party dosing system supplier. Anywhere in between these benchmarks is more of a bespoke calculation. |
