Japanese scientist Masato Sagawa has won the 2022 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in recognition of his role in inventing the neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnet. Found in everything from cars to computers, the Nd-Fe-B magnet is essential to everyday life, but rarely gets the appreciation it deserves; its market value is expected to reach $20bn by 2025. The material is integral to renewables systems, such as wind turbines, and is commonly used in motor vehicles, from the pump that pushes screen wash on to the windscreen to the sensor that enables an anti-lock braking system. The magnet is being used either as part of a motor or to initiate an electric current. "This is the biggest prize that I have received so far," said Dr Sagawa. "As you may know I have previously received the Japan Prize, which is a very big award, but the QEPrize has influence around the world and that makes it very important." |
