The decarbonisation of transport, as I said in April, presents many challenges and there are multiple inputs to be considered as we address the challenge. And no more so than the government's policy and funding, having set the bar for vehicle phase-out deadlines to 2035 and 2040. The government's response to the industry consultation on the phase-out (see p7) is to be welcomed. The diversity of inputs to this consultation is obvious. By asking for direct feedback, the consultation gathered 92 responses across UK industry. At this crucial planning stage, it is vital to communicate widely. The consultation also resulted in the announcement to fund three years of demonstrations of zero-emissions freight. There is no substitute for road miles in assessing the problems and the solutions of new technologies, and this investment mitigates the high per-vehicle cost that often discourages private-sector trials. These demonstrations will also provide information on the vehicle requirements for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. EVs live and die on their ability to recharge. |
