A complete overhaul of Dublin's passenger bus network has taken some planning. Public consultations, old routes replaced with new ones, buses collecting from surrounding towns and villages to meeting points that connect to the new main arteries into the city centre; the principle of this reform is to reduce traffic into the city centre by shuttling traffic, thus limiting harmful emissions and the number of vehicles on the road. It has already been a long journey for Ray Luby, Engineering Manager at the Broadstone depot of Dublin Bus, but one he is relishing despite its complications and the added problems linked to Covid-19. Working with the National Transport Authority (NTA) on its BusConnects project, Dublin Bus has developed the new system that will create a more efficient, reliable network which will form a key part of the government's policy to improve bus services in Irish cities. Being the main operator in the capital, Dublin Bus has taken on an integral role in remodelling the city's public transport. |
