How time flies. It seems only the other day when the trailblazer standards for apprenticeships were being rolled out, and operators were reacting to the government's imposition of apprenticeship levies. Now the Level 3 bus and coach apprenticeship standard is in revision. As with any other apprenticeship at that level, from youth support worker to mortuary technician, apprentices must have received a grade 4 or C in GCSE English and maths, if not before the start of the apprenticeship, then before they undertake the end point assessment. For this kind of work, that requirement seems reasonable. While vehicle technicians may not be the sort of people who study behind a desk all day, they still need to have the ability to comprehend instruction manuals and express themselves clearly on record forms. Similarly, they need to be comfortable enough with numbers to check digital read-outs from diagnostic equipment. However, driven by a desire to improve the industry's skills shortages by reducing barriers to entry, a Level 2 apprenticeship in the sector has been proposed, Transport Engineer understands. (It joins the Level 2 'specialist tyre operative' and LCV 'autocare technician' apprenticeships already available.) |
