REME soldiers were delighted to welcome a visit by Sophie, Countess of Wessex (pictured above), to their home in Wiltshire. During her visit, the Countess met with officers and soldiers at the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering and School of Army Aeronautical Engineering. The Queen's daughter-in-law was also invited to watch a vehicle recovery exercise. She also saw at first hand how the technical training received there is translated into operational effect. The Duke of Edinburgh was REME's Commander in Chief for decades. He served as Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps for more than SO years, taking over the role in 1969 from Princess Marina, The Duchess of Kent. However, following his death last year, the Countess of Wessex has taken on the mantle and she unveiled a plaque at the base, giving the REME technical workshops and offices a new name - The Countess of Wessex Lines. |
