The co-founder of First Group, Sir Moir Lockhead, led an SOE safety conference in early December at the DAF UK headquarters in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire. The event recognised the four leaders in safety profiled last month, one of whom - Steve Jobson, asset management business partner, DHL Supply Chain -accepted his award in person. Jobson, pictured, right, with Sir Moir, said: "We [DHL] are part of Earned Recognition, so we collect a lot of data, as well as having engineering data on maintenance cost. What we always find is that sites struggling or just about reaching compliance are underperforming in safety. And if they are struggling with compliance, they are struggling elsewhere." That theme was echoed by another presenter, Naveed Qamar, now head of safety, health, environment and quality at Aberdeen Harbour Board. He distinguished between corporate cultures of compliance and those where injury prevention is the priority. A compliant culture can still injure people, he warned. Having previously worked as First Group's group safety director, Qamar told the audience that one of its key safety tools was risk assessment; that process not only meets regulatory requirements but also serves as an enabler to ensure work is done safely. Risk assessments are not only carried out by managers, but by the people - the workers - themselves, and in connection with anything they are doing. 'There is a phrase in the First Group organisation:'if you can't do it safely, don't do it'. And that provides a right to stop work, which is empowering," Qamar said. |
