摘要: Q How important is it to immobilise vehicles that are being raised on a workshop lift? What is the best way to do so? A Ensuring a vehicle is static and secure when in for maintenance or repair cannot be over-emphasised. Safety in the workshop is an essential aspect of maintenance. A vehicle needs little force to move, even when on a flat surface. There have been incidents where a vehicle, having been jacked up and placed on stands on one side of the axle, has slid sideways during the jacking up of the opposite side and released itself from the stand, with terrible consequences. To prevent any movement the risk assessment needs to include the need to prevent any movement, and this will be with the use of wheel chocks. If a vehicle is being jacked up on one side to enable a repair or adjustment, then at least one other axle needs to be chocked on one side. If a complete axle is being lifted and worked on, then a complete axle nearside and offside needs to be chocked. To ensure safety, the correct wheel chocks need to be used. Workshop disciplines should include regular recorded checks on wheel chocks to ensure they are fit for purpose. This includes a safety check on the condition, cleanliness, correctsize and suitability for the size of wheel and tyre.
