An Alexander RL-bodied Leyland Olympian, one of 84 built in the late 1980s for dealer stock and newly privatised operators, was restored in time to make its rallying debut at the Mid Norfolk Railway's Vintage Bus Day at Dereham on May 14. G864 XDX was the third of a trio bought during 1989 by HC Chambers & Son of Bures, Suffolk, a business that Go-Ahead Group acquired in 2012, relocated to the town of Sudbury and now runs as part of its Go East Anglia operation. It represents a period when Alexander's Falkirk factory diversified its customer base to make up for the loss of business from the state-owned Scottish Bus Group, which had taken most RLs built pre-deregulation, and before a fast-expanding Stagecoach placed bulk orders. |
