Amberley's first colour picture album of 2022 offers a remarkable selection of vehicles photographed in Australia since the 1960s. Tony Finneran worked in the operating industry there and for more than 30 years as a bus and coach salesman, so he knows what he is writing about and what he has photographed. His pictures show how operators moved from buying largely British products to those of mainland European, North American and Japanese makers. Some, like an AEC Regent Ⅲ or Leyland National, are instantly recognisable to British eyes, but a preference for local bodywork cloaked many familiar model names with a distinctly Australian superstructure. These include Leyland Panthers, Leopards and Atlanteans, AEC Regal IVs, Reliances and Swifts, and a stunning twin-steer Bedford VAL. The informative captions also reveal that Albion Valiant and Atkinson Alpha chassis sit under two distinctly antipodean bodies. |
