They may not have the enduring appeal of the likes of the RT and Routemaster, but as London's most numerous first generation low-floor double-deckers, the Dennis Trident and Volvo B7TL were highly visible components of the red bus fleet for 20 years from their introduction in 1999 to the withdrawal of the final examples. The last Tridents ran in 2019, the final B7TLs the next year. Matthew Wharmby tells us in these books that ten operators took 2,255 Tridents for tendered services and ten took 2,014 B7TLs. Compare that with the 2,760 Routemasters that London Transport bought, most of them between 1959 and 1968, and their importance becomes more apparent. |
