German trolleybus and bus operator BBG in Eberswalde is buying six Van Hool A12 hydrogen fuel-cell buses to replace diesels in the fleet. The Van Hools will operate from Bernau depot from December of this year. BBG said deploying zero-emission buses in the town just northeast of Berlin was more viable than extending trolleybuses wires to the area. A dedicated refuelling plant will also be built. The A12 fuel-cell can carry 36kg of hydrogen and uses around 7kg per 100km, giving it a range of more than 500km. The project is being financed by local state government and the European Union at a cost of €2.8m (£2.34m). |
