Part of Cambridge's guided busway, between the railway station and Addenbroke's medical campus, is to close while safety features are installed. The action follows a fatal crash between a bus and a pedestrian in October 2021, in a similar spot to the death of a cyclist in 2018. Only the northbound track, adjacent to the maintenance path used by pedestrians and cyclists, is to close for an unspecified period from mid-January. Services will be diverted on to nearby roads, with Stagecoach stating that it 'will shortly be revising our busway timetables to reflect this partial track closure.' Whippet also announced that it will be revising its timetable to cope with the closure. The busway's 50mph speed limit on this section was reduced to 30mph following the 2018 crash, and in November, was further reduced to 15mph. Cambridgeshire County Council said this is the most heavily-used section of the busway by pedestrians and cyclists. Unlike a conventional road, there is no gap between the guideway and the 'pavement' section, with buses' mirrors partially overhanging the pavement area. A temporary barrier will now be installed to keep the two areas separate, while an independent safety review commissioned by the council is expected to report back in February. |
