After almost 15 months of operation, Hulleys of Baslow withdrew its X57 Sheffield - Snake Pass - Glossop -Manchester route in early January. Curiously launched after the end of the summer season in October 2020, the ambitious service provided a broadly two-hourly frequency between the two cities, with many changes to the timetable along the way. Short workings between Glossop and central Manchester succumbed as the second lockdown took effect in late 2020. Friday and Saturday late night journeys were also withdrawn for the same reason, while an extension to Manchester's airport via the university district lasted for five months. Hulleys communications about the service have been mixed, with its website and its Facebook page sometimes showing different versions of the company's timetables. It has however used Facebook for some brutally honest statements about the realities of bus operation, including the revelation that Transport for Greater Manchester has neither paid any devolved Bus Service Operators Grant nor reimbursement for concessionary passes since the route started. The company said: "We feel that, despite a number of obstacles, we have given the service every opportunity to develop and succeed but, unfortunately, good words don't pay the bills." However, the operator has doubled the parallel 257 service (Sheffield-Bakewell) to continue to provide an hourly service on the common section between Sheffield and Ladybower. This route and others within Sheffield now offer a £1 flat fare to stimulate ridership. Hulleys has also taken on Monday to Saturday operation of Stagecoach Yorkshire two-bus route 55 (Chesterfield-Alfreton), which it already provides (as 55A) on Sundays. |
