Bus services between Cardiff and Newport, jointly operated by Cardiff Bus and Newport Transport, will host one of three initial pilots of 'Pay as you Go' ticketing in Wales. Train services between the cities will be the subject of another pilot scheme. A third pilot will cover another bus route, not yet chosen. All three are due to commence in the autumn as separate ticketing facilities. Passengers will make contactless payments using their bank cards or mobile phones. Following evaluation, a fourth pilot scheme, pencilled in for autumn 2024, would combine routes and modes to enable seamless travel within the pilot area. The pilots are a step towards fulfilling the ambition of a single contactless payment system for bus and train journeys in the region, outlined in the Burns Commission report of November 2020. The commission was tasked with advising on ways to address traffic congestion on the M4 at Newport without building a new motorway around the city. |
