Passenger numbers began to slip in mid December, according to DfT figures for England, publication of which was suspended across the holiday period. The latest and more infectious variant of Covid, Omicron, caused the UK government to introduce a 'Plan B' of counteractive measures, including an instruction to return to working from home in England if possible. A requirement for infected people to isolate has also taken its toll on staff numbers, with operators again forced to cancel services or introduce temporary timetables. Stagecoach South has had to reduce timetables on many of its new routes in the Guildford area, with few of the enhancements it had hoped to introduce on Arriva's previous offerings, while Stagecoach South East has sub-contracted Seven Sisters (the company owned by the former proprietor of Seaford & District) to run three routes in the Bexhill area. Nottingham City Transport is running Saturday timetables on weekdays, telling customers it has a "shortfall of around 5% on the number of drivers we need to run our current timetable", compounded by "a further 5% of drivers ... unable to attend work whilst they self-isolate because of Covid". It says Saturday schedules "will remain in place until driver availability increases". |
