Transport for London (TfL) has published proposals to revise bus routes linking Highgate, Hampstead, Southwark and central London. It says demand on many central and inner London routes was declining prior to the coronavirus pandemic, and while the pandemic's long-term impacts on demand are currently unclear, ridership is not expected to fully return to pre-pandemic levels in the near future. It proposes merging route 1 (Tottenham Court Road - Canada Water) and 168 (Hampstead Heath - Old Kent Road) to create a new route, provisionally numbered 1, operating between Hampstead Heath and Canada Water. Route 188 (Russell Square - North Greenwich) would be diverted at Holborn to serve Tottenham Court Road instead of Russell Square. Proposed changes to routes in the Highgate area would see the withdrawal of route 271 (Highgate Village - Finsbury Square). Although it has had weekend extensions to Hendon and Moorgate, the route has remained fundamentally unaltered since it replaced trolleybus service 611 in July 1960. The 611 had been introduced in 1939 and followed the route of the former London County Council tram route 11. Prior to electrification, the section of route between Archway and Highgate Village was served by Europe's first cable tramway. |
